What to Expect During Your Mediumship Reading

For many people, scheduling a mediumship reading is something they have thought about for a long time. Some are hoping to feel a connection with a loved one who has passed, while others are simply curious about mediumship and what the experience might be like. Whatever brings you to a reading, it's completely normal to have questions, especially if you've never had one before.
One of the questions I hear most often is, "What should I expect?" My goal is always to make the experience as comfortable, natural, and meaningful as possible. There is nothing mysterious or complicated that you need to do to prepare, and you certainly don't need to have any previous experience with mediumship.

What Happens During a Mediumship Reading?
A mediumship reading is an opportunity to explore a possible connection with loved ones who have passed. As an evidential medium, my focus is on sharing information that may help you recognize the person being communicated with, rather than simply offering general messages that could apply to anyone.
This information might include personality traits, relationships, memories, mannerisms, or details about someone's life. Sometimes the smallest pieces of information are the most recognizable. A particular habit, a familiar expression, or something that seemed insignificant at the time can hold a great deal of meaning for the person receiving the reading.
I believe it's important to share information as I receive it, allowing you to determine what is meaningful and what you recognize. Not every piece of information will necessarily make sense, and that's okay. You should never feel pressured to agree with something simply because it has been shared during a reading.
Do I Need to Prepare Anything?
The short answer is no. You don't need to bring photographs, personal belongings, or a list of information about your loved ones.
I do recommend finding a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be interrupted. Since my private readings are conducted by phone, you can participate from wherever you feel most relaxed. Having a glass of water and perhaps a few tissues nearby is never a bad idea, although not every reading is an emotional experience.
Some people like to write down a few questions beforehand, which is perfectly fine. Just remember that a mediumship reading isn't necessarily a question-and-answer session where every question will receive a response. It's helpful to approach the experience without a rigid expectation of how it should unfold.
Will a Specific Loved One Come Through?
This is probably one of the most common questions people have before a reading, particularly when they are hoping to connect with a parent, spouse, child, or someone else who was especially important to them.
While you may have a particular person in mind, I cannot promise that a specific loved one will be represented during your session. Mediumship does not work like making a phone call, where we can simply select someone and begin a conversation. There are aspects of the experience that cannot be predicted or controlled.
I encourage people to remain open to the experience without feeling that it needs to happen in one particular way to be meaningful. At the same time, it's important to have realistic expectations and understand that a connection or specific message can never be guaranteed.
What If I Get Emotional?
People often wonder whether they will cry during a reading. The truth is that everyone responds differently.
Some people become emotional when hearing information that reminds them of someone they love. Others laugh at a familiar personality trait or memory, and some simply enjoy the experience with very little outward emotion. There is no right or wrong way to respond.
Grief and love are deeply personal, and a reading can bring up feelings you weren't expecting. You never need to apologize for becoming emotional, and you don't need to feel that you should be emotional either. My intention is to provide a comfortable, respectful environment where you can simply be yourself.
What If Something Doesn't Make Sense?
This is another important part of understanding evidential mediumship. Not every detail shared during a reading will be immediately recognizable, and some information may not resonate at all.
Occasionally, people recognize a detail later after speaking with family members or remembering something they hadn't thought about in years. Other times, a detail remains unrecognized. It is important not to force information to fit or assume that every statement must have a hidden meaning.
I appreciate honest feedback during a reading. If something makes sense, you can say so. If it doesn't, that's perfectly fine too. A reading should never feel like a test where you're expected to come up with the correct answer.
Is a Mediumship Reading the Same as a Psychic Reading?
Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a distinction between psychic and mediumistic work.
Psychic readings generally focus on intuitive information relating to a person's life, circumstances, or personal questions. Mediumship, on the other hand, focuses specifically on experiences interpreted as communication with those who have passed.
At Heart & Spirit Mediumship, I offer both evidential mediumship readings and intuitive guidance sessions because people come to these experiences for different reasons. Someone seeking a connection with a loved one may have a very different intention than someone looking for perspective on a personal situation.
Neither type of session should take away your ability to make your own decisions. I believe that personal choice, thoughtful reflection, and individual responsibility should always remain in your hands.
What Should I Do After My Reading?
There is no particular way you need to feel when your session ends. Some people leave feeling peaceful, others have a lot to think about, and some find themselves reflecting on the experience in the days that follow.
You may find it helpful to jot down a few notes about details you recognized, questions that came up, or memories you want to revisit. If there was information you didn't recognize, you can leave it as an open question without feeling obligated to find an explanation.
Most importantly, allow yourself to experience the reading without putting pressure on it to resolve every emotion or provide every answer. Mediumship can be a meaningful part of someone's personal journey, but it is not a replacement for the support, relationships, and other resources we sometimes need as we navigate life and loss.
A Final Thought
Having a mediumship reading doesn't require you to believe anything in particular. You can be curious, hopeful, skeptical, or somewhere in between. I welcome thoughtful questions and believe that everyone deserves to approach the experience in a way that feels comfortable and authentic to them.
Mediumship has been a natural part of my life since childhood, and I understand that it isn't something everyone has experienced or necessarily understands. As a medium and an educator, I value helping people feel informed, respected, and comfortable asking questions.
Whether you're considering your first reading or have experienced mediumship before, my hope is that you come away feeling that your time was treated with genuine care, honesty, and respect.
